Baggage Series 1

Written by and starring Hilary Lyon, the series was set in the capital of Scotland and centres on the lives of three (40-ish) friends of preposterous long-standing, Caroline, Fiona and Ruth. The Celtic trio’s lives are not turning out quite as they were supposed to as they see each other through break-ups and breakdowns, yet somehow still manage to have seriously good fun along the way.

Caroline (Hilary Lyon) is sellotaping her life together again after the abrupt departure of her MSP husband, Alistair (Peter Capaldi), when she finds herself sharing her flat with the uninvited Fiona (Phyllis Logan) who has abruptly taken leave of her senses and her long-suffering husband, Roddy. Dumpee and dumper struggle to co-exist in an uneasy truce of mutual support while bohemian single mother, Ruth (Adie Allen), is always on hand to give advice when it’s not asked for and is generally available for stirring up already troubled waters.

Baggage - series 1 kicks off on Midsummer’s Night and takes us through the Festival, Halloween, Guy Fawkes’ Night and Christmas, culminating on a wild, whisky-drenched Scottish Hogmanay with Edinburgh providing a unique backdrop for all the fireworks, drama and humour the capital is famous for.

Hilary Lyon: Creator, Writer and Co-star of Baggage

I think actors moving into writing is a fairly logical progression as it is the job of an actor to observe and interpret how people behave and react and speak to each other in everyday life. Writing probably stems from the same creative impulse, obviously in a different form but, nonetheless, it is still fundamentally about observation and storytelling.

I first started writing in earnest a few years ago when I found I had an increasing amount of free time on my hands. It’s a bit of a shock when it actually happens; suddenly you find that you are that woman in your late 30s/early 40s and unless you’re on a very short list of high-profile TV leading ladies, you’re going to have to hang on until you hit the ’very mature’ bracket before picking up much work again. Mind you many actors feel that this state of affairs is always an occupational hazard; too fat, too thin, too posh, too plebby, too tall, too dark, too…….well just generally too.

As to what you produce……I think the old adage about writing about what you know is probably very sound, certainly as a new scribe.

Baggage came about as I’m particularly interested in what happens to women hitting 40; it’s unlikely that by this age one has not experienced some fairly major ‘stuff’; death, divorce, children or no children, career crisis blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, etc. It’s also fascinating looking at a group of women who have known each other for a verrry long time; how they cope with bridging the gap between expectation and reality; how they grow up, grow apart or grow together. Most importantly, however, I marvel at people’s resilience to get through the ‘stuff’ and still have a sense of humour and a seriously good laugh along the way.
